Makeup Tutorial – The Little Mermaid

For my last official Halloween tutorial for the year, I decided to transform myself into The Little Mermaid!

I’m disappointed that I didn’t manage to film more Halloween looks, because I had SO many ideas up my sleeve! But I did promise one of my subbies that I will do a Little Mermaid look so I felt compelled to go through with it :)

But never fear, you guys know that I will still be filming costume makeup looks here and there, even when it’s not Halloween lol!

For the makeup, I came up with my own interpretation of how The Little Mermaid would look. It is very theatrical and glamourous – almost like a pin-up mermaid!

This is not a tutorial for Ariel from the Disney movie, as she didn’t have green skin or scales on her face. But it is inspired by elements of Ariel’s character, such as the flaming red hair and the overall green and purple colour theme.

When I posted a sneak peek photo on my Facebook page, someone commented that it looked like a Poison Ivy makeup look and I totally know where she’s coming from! This makeup look would definitely be great for Poison Ivy if you used less of the gold eyeshadow and switched the fuchsia lipcolour to a dark green.

I somehow always imagined The Little Mermaid to have scales not only on her tail, but also on her face and body (I didn’t add scales to my body, but you can!), and that they disappear after she transforms into a human.

When I was first trialing the look, I drew the scales using eyeshadow. But I was not happy with the result as the scales were too faint and it looked a bit messy.

In the end, I decided to create scales by sticking gold and green sequins to the sides of my face using eyelash glue. They stayed on really well but was the biggest pain to remove as the glue was just so sticky! I advise you to place a warm towel on the face to soften the glue and wipe gently to remove the sequins.

I just created random irregular shapes, you can come up with your own and make them as big or as small as you like!



Initially I was going to film the video as just a makeup tutorial, as I didn’t really have a mermaid outfit. But since I decided to use sequins to imitate fish scales on my face, I realised that I have several sequin boob-tube dresses in my closet which I can turn into a ‘mermaid tail’. I decided to use my gold sequin dress from Bardot which I’ve had for years but somehow never found the right occasion to wear. The boob-tube style of the dress was perfect for the costume, as it hugged my hips and flared out at the bottom. For my top, I wore a SUPER tight purple boob-tube top from Supre, which is rather reminiscent of Ariel’s purple shell bra :P

For the accessories, I wore a beautiful pair of dangly gold sea-shell earrings and a matching bracelet (except I wore it on my ankle). I also wore a green jeweled bracelet and ring, all of which are from Diva.

Oh and I got my curly red wig from eBay – it’s absolutely GORGEOUS and makes me want to impulsively dye my hair the same shade haha!

And just ending this post with a comparison photo of the makeup look with the red wig and my natural black hair (looking so flat cos I took the photo after wearing the wig for over an hour – wig hair!).

I definitely think that the curly red hair really completes this look, as it is so iconic because of the loveable Ariel, but it also looks gorgeous with natural hair. If you do decided to wear this look with your natural hair, make sure that you use a matching brow liner!

My Parent’s 25th Silver Wedding Anniversary

At the start of this month, my parents celebrated their 25th ‘Silver’ Wedding Anniversary! We had a big lunch with all our family and close friends to celebrate the special day :)

For my makeup, I decided to go for a similar look to my Classic Red Lips Makeup Tutorial. The key to this look is keeping the eye makeup simple, so that all the focus is on the perfect red lips. So I just used liquid liner and a pair of curly lashes for my eyes and a berry-red lipstick for my lips.

For my outfit, I wore my favourite jumpsuit from Femme Connection, which is the only store where their maxi dresses and jumpsuits actually fit me perfectly (usually they’re way too long!). I really like the decorated collar :)

I added a brown belt at the waist and kept the accessories simple with just a black lace bangle. For my shoes, I chose a pair of wine-red netted heels I bought on an Australian online shoe store called Eastlayne Shoes. They have fashionable (often designer-inspired) shoes at very affordable prices! I saw the exact same design of these shoes at Miu Miu for 10X the price!

For the celebration lunch, we once again went to Tao’s Restaurant where we also celebrated my dad’s 49th birthday a couple of months ago.

This time we didn’t dine in the private room as there were way too many guests, so we had to sit in the main restaurant area. That’s why the lighting is not as good and I had to brighten the photos.

We started off with Tao’s assorted seasonal platter, which consisted of mayo tuna in a lettuce leaf, lightly seared scallop and bacon-wrapped asparagus. I really enjoyed the scallop because it was only very slightly cooked and still sweet and tender on the inside.

For my entree, I chose the Kai-seki style sashimi. I love the presentation of this dish, with the salmon and mackerel perched on a glass of ice, the scallop and sea urchin roe (uni) sashimi placed in their shells and the pickled ginger (gari) resting on a pebble. All the sashimi were very fresh, although I didn’t eat the mackerel – it was WAY too fishy.

For my soup, I chose the cream of mushroom soup. This was so creamy and delicious because it contained little bits of blended mushroom.


For my main, I had the hot stone sizzling steak, which was accompanied by the rice of the day (fried rice with dried shrimp). The steak was placed on a banana leaf on top of a hot stone to keep it hot. It came with a pepper sauce (too peppery!) and a side of vegetables.

This was the only let-down of the whole meal, because I asked for my steak to be cooked medium and the steak that was placed infront of me was definitely rare! I had to ask the waitress to take the steak back and the chef recooked it for me, which made it well-done in the end. *Sigh*! Oh well, I guess it’s my fault for ordering steak at an Asian-style restaurant lol!

Finally for my dessert, I chose good ol’ cream brulee. It was a bit too ‘eggy’ for my liking but it was a good way to end the meal.

Here I am with my lovely parents :) They look better after 25 years of marriage than when they first wed!

And just finishing off this post with the ADORABLE (and huge) anniversary cake chosen by my aunty. They cute drawing look just like my parents (although the cartoon man was meant to have glasses like my dad haha!). My mum saved the piece of the cake with the drawing of them and she’s put it in the freezer as a keepsake – so funny >__<!

Congratulations to my dear parents on the amazing milestone! I hope I will have an equally loving and lasting marriage in the future :)

‘Alice in Wonderland’ Halloween Collaboration – Cheshire Cat Makeup Transformation

At my meet-up with my lovely fellow Melbournian Youtube beauty gurus – Roseanne, Karla, Alee, Daniel and Angela – we thought it would be heaps of fun to do a special Halloween makeup collaboration together. We threw around many creative ideas that night but in the end, we decided on a ‘Alice in Wonderland’ theme where each of us will do a makeup tutorial on one of the main characters.

I chose to be the Cheshire Cat. He was one of my favourite characters from the 1951 Disney ‘Alice in Wonderland’ movie because he was so funny but creepy and weird at the same time.

I based my look off this film version :)

The collaboration starts with my Cheshire Cat video and the story continues with Roseanne’s Red Queen, Karla’s White Queen, Alee’s White Rabbit, Daniel’s Mad Hatter and finally ending with Angela’s Alice.

HUGE kudos to Roseanne for writing up the wonderful script and for the amazing editing of the intros and the outros – thank you!

MAKEUP

I filmed my actual transformation tutorial about a week after filming our collaboration so the makeup is slightly different.

The photo on the right left was on the day of the collaboration and as you can see, my makeup was lighter and I had thick black brows. I improved upon this look for my actual tutorial and I think it looks so much better without the black brows!

I used face-paint only to paint on the mouth, everything else is just regular makeup! I have to admit it was a little difficult to make the eyeshadow colours show up well on the face, the key is to build the colour and to use a dense blending brush.


Here are the usual photos I put at the end of my tutorials, I didn’t include them this time because we had a set video style for this collaboration.

COSTUME

The Cheshire Cat costume began as a great dilemma for me. As many of you guys know from my previous costume makeup/transformation tutorials, I prefer putting together my own costumes instead of buying a pre-made one, as it is more unique and fun. But for this look, I didn’t have anything in my wardrobe that was even close to resembling the Cheshire Cat!

So my first thought was to purchase a costume online. I looked on eBay and other online costume stores and saw that the majority of Cheshire Cat costumes consisted of striped dresses that were rather skimpy. They were way too sexy for my liking as I wanted this to be more of a traditional costume look.

Eventually I did find some more suitable costumes which was basically a jumpsuit with some furry paws attached. These were sold for at least $50USD (excluding shipping) and they all came from the US which meant shipping would take quite a while. I really didn’t want to pay this much money for a costume I was only going to wear for a one-off makeup tutorial.

However, one day I was going through my wardrobe and I came across a pair of purple leggings which I never wore and I had a total light-bulb moment. If I could find a matching top and glue strips of pink ribbon to it, I’d have myself a Cheshire Cat costume!

I’m not much of a DIY person, but I decided to give it a go :)


To start off, I have my purple leggings and a purple long sleeved top, which are both from Supre. I also got some rolls of hot pink ribbon from The Reject Shop to use as the stripes on the Cheshire Cat. For the tools, you need some scissors, a hot glue gun and some spare sticks of glue.

I then cut off bits of the ribbon and used the hot glue gun to glue them evenly across the leggings and the top. I only glued them to the front of the leggings and the top to save time and effort but you can choose to glue them across the back too if you want.

Make sure you put some newspaper underneath to avoid getting the glue on the floor and remember to always be careful when using a hot glue gun because the glue can get very hot! Do ask your parents to help you if you are very young.


I also bought this funky-coloured, furry material from Spotlight because the colour and the pattern immediately reminded me of the Cheshire Cat. This cost $20 a meter (I bought half a meter) – who knew material can be so expensive?!?

I cut off bits of this material and glued it around the end of my sleeves and the bottom of my leggings to make it look like cat paws. I also glued a strip to the bottom of my top and used some to wrap around my neck as a ‘furry collar’.

And lastly, for my ears, I bought a pair of black cat ears from Spotlight. I then cut out the shape of the ears from the furry material and stuck them on using strips of Hollywood tape.

I paired this with a bright pink afro wig which I’ve had around for ages.

And TADAAA!! This is my completed Cheshire Cat costume! I am very proud of my DIY effort as I am usually not a very crafty person :P

I think this would definitely make a unique and eye-catching costume for Halloween!

BEHIND THE SCENES

We decided to film the collaboration at my house, so everyone brought their costumes and makeup over to get ready. We all got ready in my room and the whole process took quite a while – we ended up with bags, makeup, wigs and accessories all over the floor!

Poor Gaetano (Daniel’s partner) had to sit around and watch us get ready :P

Initially, we planned to film the collaboration outdoors in my backyard. However, it rained that day and the next best thing was to film it in my dining room using my large dining room table.

I already bought heaps of cupcakes and cookies from the supermarket, as well as cupcakes which my little sister kindly baked for me. Everyone else also contributed with their own cupcakes and cookies so we ended up with heaps and heaps of food!

So we conjured the perfect Alice in Wonderland tea party table by decorating it with cupcakes, cookies (with our customised writing lol!), tea pots, tea cups, coloured plates and napkins and random straws. I am totally impressed with our creative effort!



And these are just some behind-the-scenes photos during our collaboration shoot. I didn’t take many photos because we ended up having to use my camera to film as well. Although we only had a few short scenes to film, it took several hours because it was often difficult to get the lighting and angles right and we had SO many bloopers! We also couldn’t help nibbling on the yummy food while filming lol! Overall it was an exhausting but fun experience :D

Although it took alot of time and effort, I had SO much fun with this whole collaboration and am so proud that we managed to pull this off! A 6-way makeup collaboration is almost unheard of on Youtube so well done guys! ^___^

October – Think Pink for Breast Cancer and Blog Giveaway

October is internationally recognised as the Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as most of you guys would have noticed, many products have turned ‘pink’ this month to support the cause.

For those who have followed my channel since the start would have watched my ‘Barbie Makeup Tutorial – Think Pink for Breast Cancer’ around this time last year. This year, I’ve decided to do a blog giveaway in order to help raise awareness.

Breast cancer is cancer originating from the breast tissue and makes up 22.9% of all cancers in women worldwide.

In Australia, there are many different breast cancer organisations; such as The National Breast Cancer Foundation, McGrath Foundation, Cancer Council’s Pink Ribbon Day, The Think Pink Foundation and Breast Cancer Australia. Please check them out!

Here are some quick facts about breast cancer taken from The National Breast Cancer Foundation FAQ page:

  • Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Australia.
  • One in nine women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.
  • By 2015, 15,409 women are projected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia every year – an average of 42 women every day.
  • Australian women diagnosed with breast cancer have an 88% chance of surviving 5 years after diagnosis relative to the general population of women in Australia.
  • Improvements in survival are attributed to earlier detection of breast cancer through population-based mammography screening and improved treatment outcomes for breast cancer.
  • Increasing age is one of the strongest risk factors for developing breast cancer. About three out of four breast cancer cases occur in women aged 50 years and older.
  • On average, seven women die from breast cancer every day in Australia. Finding breast cancer early increases the chance of surviving the disease.
  • Of the 14,204 women predicted to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, over 800 are expected to be less than 40 years old.
  • Although rare, breast cancer can also affect men, accounting for approximately 1 in 125 cases.

So as you can see, breast cancer is a wide-spread disease and greatly affects not only the sufferers, but also their family and friends. My family has also been personally affected by breast cancer, as two of my great aunts died from it :(

That’s why it is so important to help fund research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. And only through research may we hope to one day find a cure.

It doesn’t matter if you donate money or just buy a pink ribbon – every little bit helps.

These are some of the pink products I bought from work last week. I’m still waiting for the Pink Ribbon Day products to come into the store so I can also purchase some ribbons, pins and other merchandise.

Not much to say other than this is a nice hot pink shower scrub!

This ‘Think Pink’ rubber ducky is super cute! ^___^ Although I don’t have a bathtub in my bathroom, I couldn’t resist buying it, it even flashes different colours!

Transformation Tutorial – Ling Xiaoyu from ‘Tekken’

My latest video is a transformation tutorial for the character Ling Xiaoyu from ‘Tekken’ (specifically ‘Tekken 5′).

Tekken is my all-time favourite fighting game, I remember I use to be obsessed with playing it when I was younger :P Ling Xiaoyu is my favourite character because she’s adorable but also kicks-ass!

The makeup itself is very simple because it essentially is a big-eyes makeup look. The key is to capture Ling Xiaoyu’s youthful beauty so the focus is on glowing, radiant skin and big, bright eyes.

I wore a pair of ‘Diamond Pink’ lenses which were sponsored by Pinky Paradise.

This is a great look to pair with other cosplay costumes and even for daily wear if you want to sport some cute dolly eyes :)


Usually for Halloween looks, I like to put together my own costume from things I already have in my wardrobe. But I already had this costume lying around because my sister bought it to wear to ‘Manifest’ (Melbourne Anime Festival).

I ordered it for her on an eBay store called ‘human_go’ and it was shipped from Hong Kong. The costume came with the feather cheongsam dress, silver shorts, 2X wrist cuffs and 2X hair wraps and cost $68USD + $35 shipping + extra $20 for expedited shipping, which ended up being $123UDS (very expensive IMO).

However, we had a very big fiasco with this costume. The costume reached us in a week after it was ordered (due to the expedited shipping), however, when I opened the package, it was totally the wrong costume (it was a random guy’s costume)! Confused and annoyed, I called the Hong Kong phone number on the package and it was picked up by the seller’s mother who couldn’t speak English. Thankfully I can speak Mandarin so I told her to ask her son to call me back.

When the seller called me back, I angrily told him about the situation and it turned out that he accidentally shipped our Ling Xiaoyu to someone else in Australia and shipped their costume to us!

I was extremely unimpressed and irritated i at this point, because even if the seller sent the costume again, it would not reach us in time for the event. But thankfully, it turns out that the other customer lived relatively close to my house and we were able to work out an arrangement to swap the costumes! *Phew*!

Although it was an accident and everyone makes mistakes, you would think parcels would be checked more carefully upon shipping, especially when customers are paying $100+ for the costumes! It really shows a lack of professionalism (and when the number on the parcel goes straight to the seller’s house!).

The quality of the costume is very good, except the feathers on the shoulders were quite uneven and my sister had to sew in extra feathers.

So when shopping online for cosplay or Halloween costumes, I would advise you guys to shop around for different options and order at least a month in advance, as many of these costumes are sent from overseas and it takes at least 2 weeks to be delivered. Also, in case a shipping mistake happens (like it did to us), there is enough time to rectify the problem.

My 6 Year Anniversary

A couple of weeks ago, my boyfriend James and I celebrated our 6 year anniversary ♥

I had an 8-hour shift during the day and had to rush home to change, do my hair and makeup and rush to the city. I was wearing my L’Oreal Infallible foundation all day and is truly is a long-lasting foundation, I didn’t even have to touch it up! It’s not my HG foundation for nothin’!

I went for a soft pink and purple look using the gorgeous Laura Mercier Silk Road Palette (above) which was given to me by Adore Beauty (Click here to watch my review). I used all the eyeshadow shades, as well as the blush and highlighter to achieve this look. I finished off with a pair of natural lashes and a pearly pink lipstick.

For my hair, I tied it into a loose bun at the side of my head and used alot of bobby pins to hold down the loose ends.

I wore a one-shoulder magenta dress from ‘Forever 21′, kindly given to me by my friend Vivian. I love dresses with ruffles, it’s very feminine and romantic. Because it’s a bold coloured dress, I went with cream coloured accessories and shoes for a bit of contrast.

James surprised me by sending a dozen roses to my work. They were beautiful and put a smile on my face for the whole day :)

That night, we went to dinner at ‘Comme’, a French-style restaurant in the CBD. It’s nestled in an alleyway and the interior is intimate, stylish and relaxed.

After we ordered, we were given a bowl of freshly sliced baguette with butter. The bread was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside and the butter was so deliciously soft and creamy (never thought I’d rave about butter haha!).

For my entree, I picked a scallop and crab boudin blanc, veloute of fennel, young chervil. A boudin blanc is a ‘white sausage’ and it was my first time trying it (surprisingly, I knew what it was cos I watched too much ‘MasterChef’ lol). The texture is very soft and it almost melts in your mouth and it was accompanied perfectly by the veloute of fennel (a French sauce). Overall, it was a very light and refreshing dish.


For my main, I chose the Otway pork – lightly cured scotch and belly, grilled fennel, tomato gratinee and pernod. We also got ‘pomme frites’ on the side, which turned out to be French fries lol! It came with a mustard mayo dip.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the tomato gratinee (too mushy!) or the toasted fennel, but I enjoyed the pork immensely. The belly was tender and succulent and the scotch was full of flavour.

Because we were both so full from our meal, we decided to each have a plate of petite fours for dessert :) Our plate consisted of caramel slice, orange cake, chocolate and coconut marshmallow and lavender macaroon.

This dinner was a wonderful way to celebrate our 6 years together. In those 6 years, we have matured from teenagers to adults and we both have shaped each other to who we are today.

He is not just my boyfriend, he is also my best friend :)

It’s been a while since I did a sponsored video for Adore Beauty. For those who are not aware of my partnership with Adore Beauty, you can watch my announcement video here.

But basically, Adore Beauty is Australia’s leading authorised online beauty shop and I partnered with them very early on in my channel (before I had 500 subscribers). They send me new products from various makeup collections that they stock on their website, then I go ahead and test them out and film a short review/demonstration or makeup tutorial.

So this video is a review and demonstration on two new products from Clarins Colour Definition Fall Makeup Collection – the 3D Radiance Face Powder and the Instant Definition Mascara.



Clarins Colour Definition 3D Radiance Face Powder – $60AUD

First up is the Clarins Colour Definition 3D Radiance Face Powder. It comes in Clarins’ signature gold compact (so pretty but so scratch and fingerprints prone) and the design of the powder itself is so fun and different, not to mention, beautifully intricate.

It’s like a Gameboy and a face powder had a baby LOL!

The powder has a four-toned, 3D pixel design, with the beige and peach pixels helping to even out and illuminate the skin, and the pink and lilac pixels giving radiance and glow.

As you can see from the swatches, the pink and the lilac pixels are quite pigmented. But mixed together, the overall effect is sheer.

The powder is said to suit all skin tones, but it will show up better on those with fair skin. Therefore, those with darker skin tones may want to use this as a highlight instead. I used this as an all over finishing powder and it gave my skin a subtle healthy glow.

Overall, I really like this face powder (I have to admit, a big part of the ‘like’ comes from the adorable design), even though its effects are not very drastic or noticeable. It feels silky smooth on the skin and it definitely is something I would wear all year round!


Clarins Instant Definition Mascara (Intense Blue) – $42AUD

Next is the Clarins Instant Definition Mascara. Adore Beauty sent me ‘intense blue’, but it’s also available in ‘intense brown’ and ‘intense black’.

It also comes in the signature gold packaging and features an innovative 2-in-1 brush design, where the the tip of the brush is smaller. That enables the brush to seperate and lengthen every lash, even the small ones in the corners of the eyes.

The mascara has a repairing and nourishing formula which helps to strengthen the lashes and also suitable for contact lens wearers and sensitive eyes.



I have naturally straight and thin lashes, and I’ve yet to find my HG mascara. Although this mascara didn’t manage to hold the curls, it did lengthen and define my lashes nicely. So I imagine those who have naturally curly lashes will really love this mascara!

In June, I reached the amazing milestone of 10,000 subscribers, and on October 1st, it was my 1 year anniversary on Youtube. And what better way to celebrate than to host my very first video makeup contest?!

The official theme of the contest is ‘Scream for Halloween’! So I want you to come up with a Halloween makeup look that is inspired by horror. It can be a traditional Halloween look such as a vampire, werewolf, mummy, witch, ghost, evil doll, Bride of Frankenstein etc, or it can be a character from a horror film, music video, cartoon, book or myth. The look doesn’t have to be plain scary, it can be artistic, sexy, cute etc, depending on your style, as long as it is inspired by horror.

You can choose to just do the makeup or you can go all-out and include hair and outfit/costume, but keep in mind the makeup should be the most important element.

You can film the video like a tutorial or a fast-forwarded video. You can already have the makeup on and just talk about it in the video or you can even do a photo slide show, it’s totally up to you!

Remember to think outside the box and be creative – don’t be afraid to look crazy! I love crazy haha! :P

Contest Rules:

1) You a subscriber to my Youtube channel in order to enter this contest.

2) All entries must be posted as a video response to this contest video. All videos responses will first need to be approved by me before they will show up as a video response (to filter out spam videos).

3) You can only enter this contest once with 1 video showing 1 horror-inspired Halloween look.

4) All video entries must be original. The video must be made especially for this contest and not have been used for a previous contest.

5) All video entries must say something ‘MissPixieLulu Scream for Halloween Contest’ in the video title and somewhere in the video itself. You can either say it in the video, add it in using text or write it on a piece of paper and hold it up for me to see.

6) All videos must be under 5 minutes. (Note: I realise that it can be difficult to keep the videos under 5 minutes, so I will still accept longer video entries, but please TRY and keep it short!)

7) If you are under the age of 18, please get your parent’s permission before entering this contest. This is because I will ask you for your postal details if you are one of the winners.

Contest Deadline:

12:00am EST 30th of October 2011

I will then personally watch and judge all of the entries and pick the three lucky winners, who will be announced in a video sometime in November.
